Pretreatment Psychological Evaluation

Pain psychologists frequently participate in the evaluation of a patients suitability for placement on opiates for long term management.  The psychologist can gather critical information about the patient’s cognitive or behavioral barriers to appropriate medication use, substance abuse history, medication compliance, and mental health problems.  They gather information about the patient’s ability to understand specific treatment such as difficult surgeries, or actions of medications and procedures.

Psychological screening prior to undergoing a spinal cord stimulator implant, or drug administration pump system is required by most pain specialists and insurance companies including Medicare.
